Flute solo, piano and snare drum - unknown, Irish 13016. This is a medley recorded by flute player John McKenna in 1925, and also recorded in recent times on LPs by McKenna fans Frankie Gavin and Marcas O'Murchu. Higgins was from Ballinomore, Co. Leitrim, where McKenna was and is very much held in respect. These hornpipes are better known as the Minstrel's Fancy and the Greencastle. The bass and drums backing is unique and a very light, pleasant sound. Irish was a subsidiary of a New York...

Flute duet, unknown - piano, Irish I-3011. A pair of fiery jigs from these Leitrim musicians. Some private recordings of Jack Dolan may be heard at http://www.lafferty.ca/music/irish/flute-geezers/. Both tunes were recorded by John McKenna, the first in duet with James Morrison, the second with Eddie Mehan; Morrison recorded it solo as well.

Fiddle solo, Decca or London label, unknown - piano. This recording was reissued on an LP, the Irish Phonograph, which is now out of print, and I only have a dub of it, so can't supply discographical information. The second reel is the first commercial recording of a composition of Ed Reavy, famous Cavan/Philadelphia fiddler/composer. His title for it was the Hunter's House; innumerable recordings over the years have tunes simply titled "Reavy's," though. Reavy was good friends with...

Fiddle solo, unknown - piano, London P18239. An old set dance, transcribed both in both 6/8 jig time and 4/4 hornpipe meter. Sean plays it at a very leisurely pace, one can easily imagine a dancer stepping away to his fiddle. The abrupt double stops are very charming in their mannered way, a nifty example of Maguire's fusion of traditional and classical techniques.

Flute solo, unknown bass and snare drum, Irish 13016. The first reel is the Traveller. Captain Kelly was a "Gentleman piper" commemorated in a different reel than this one, which resembles the Connaught Reel, a tune recorded on 78 by Galway flute player Tom Morrison.

Irish bagpipe chanter, fiddle, flute, unknown label and recording date. The exact name of this ensemble eludes me at the moment. Martin Feeney is the flute player; the piper is Andy Conroy, a Roscommon musician who played in an exceedingly staccato style, almost experimental in ways, which he puts on hold for these excellent sets of tunes.

Irish bagpipes solo, Copley 9-191. This was the first commercial recording by the great Dublin piper, who also made a few sides for the fledgling Gael-Linn company, which have been reissued on the Setting Sail 2CD set. Tommy was featured on the piping compilation Drones and Chanters, and had his own LP in the 70s, the Stone in the Field. On the Drones and Chanters he plays both the Scholar and the Salamanca. The Scholar is a composition of the prolific 19th century Newcastle fiddler James Hill,...

Flute duet, unknown - piano, Irish I-3011. These reels are the Galway Rambler and the London Lassies, tunes which have had an innumerable number of titles attached to them. Michael Coleman's student Hughie Gillespie also recorded the Galway Rambler as Paddy Finlay's Fancy. Finley was a piccolo player who made a 78 with Coleman, one side of which may be heard on this site.

Fiddle solo, unknown - piano, London P18239. "Slow Reels," arranged by M. Solomon, whoever he was. Maguire goes from one tune to the other all through this disc. These are still popular tunes, Maguire's version of the Dawn goes up to high C#, requiring shifting up the neck, which he was very adept at, having a classical background, which eventually took much more of a role in his music, his LPs featuring many technically ambitious tunes. On this early disc though, he plays in a more...
